RE: THE TWO YOUTHS
I can’t get over The Two Youths. I’m not sure how to describe them but I’ll say that it’s like if Annie Lenox decided to do an electro-goth thing. They’re from around here (triangle area NC) and heard it was a performance that had to be seen. I was floored with Oona Palumbo’s vocal performance, how she gives you everything they have until they nearly collapse, spending each feel to the last cent, then snap back with a shivering breath. <3!!!
I’m over the moon for their first single, Chewing Gum. The swells, the scene changes, the space shifts keep me warm and bouncing when listening to this dark-synth-pop song (is that a thing?). The bass synth is like this big woolly vibration whose beat plays with the reflections coming out of her Silvertone guitar.
There’s a quirky humor in songs like Airplane Mode that remind of Laurie Anderson’s talk-singing and cleaver inflection (oh, and I guess the airplane reference, duh). There’s this Anna Calvi meets Scott Walker thing happening in some tracks. It’s seated comfortably in environments that could have been programed by Roxy Music or Radiohead.
The Two Youths have been touring the East Coast and Midwest over the past year so I’ve been able to see them a few times and I’m really into their hardware-only setup (read: non-laptop). They’re also recording quite a bit lately so I can’t wait to buy the next releases.
Their cover of Toni Basil's Mickey is unexpected and utterly heartbreaking. </3
